U steel arch is a kind of passive support for coal mine. It has high tensile strength and compressive strength, good toughness, high support force, large support strength and can be used repeatedly. It is widely used in the mine U lane, especially in deep complex roadways and soft coal seam roadways.
Steel arch supports are used for roof support or ground control where severe conditions are anticipated or to maintain critical areas of a mine or tunnel where roof bolting or cribbing is not sufficient or practical. Used in conjunction with Camber Lagging systems, arches can solve difficult conditions on a long-term basis.

Tunnel arches in mine tunnels and roadways supporting provides not only a higher resistance but also a yielding support. When the surrounding ground reaches a certain degree, avoiding arch failure.
U profile steel arches instead of other frames, timber ones or different steel sections, in mining operations have the following advantages:
1. Higher resistance against transversal and longitudinal stresses.
2. Allow a very high roadway section convergency.
3. Easy and fast assembling.
4. Can be re-used after recovery and cold forming.

At present, tunneling machines, provided with a device placed near their heads, have been developed to do the pre-assembling and arch settlement against wall presure.

For civil works, but under special order, steel arches bent on the reverse side are manufactured which together with the bolting and projected concrete sets up the flexible lining.
